Flags being planted at Arlington National Cemetery in 2008
At a time when our president and other politicians tend to apologize for our country's prior actions, here's a refresher on how some of our former patriots handled negative comments about our country. These are good:
JFK'S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early '60s when DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaulle said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible.
Rusk responded "does that include those who are buried here?"
DeGaulle did not respond.
You could have heard a pin drop.
When in England , at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush.
He answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."
You could have heard a pin drop.
There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?"
A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?"
You could have heard a pin drop.
A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries.
Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?"
Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, "Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German."
You could have heard a pin drop.
AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE...
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on.
"You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."
The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."
"Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France !"
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to."
You could have heard a pin drop.
If you are proud to be an American, pass this on! If not, delete it.
Kai Bird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and biographer. He has also won the National Book Critics Circle Award. His most recent book is "Crossing Mandelbaum Gate: Coming of Age Between the Arabs and Israelis, 1956-1978."
(CNN) -- Arab modernity. Why is it that at the beginning of the 21st century the Arab world seems stuck in time? Why are most Arabs still ruled by kings or military dictatorships? And specifically, why has the most populous Arab nation, Egypt, been governed by one man for nearly three decades?
President Hosni Mubarak, a former general, came to power in the aftermath of Anwar Sadat's assassination in October 1981. He has ruled Egypt ever since under a state of emergency.
Last week, Mubarak's regime extended for another two years a Draconian emergency law that permits police to detain individuals indefinitely, prohibits unauthorized assembly and severely restricts freedom of speech.
We Americans should care about this state of affairs. Mubarak's regime exists in part because our tax dollars subsidize this dictatorship to the tune of several billion dollars a year. We also support the Saudi royalty. And although President Obama and previous presidents have often spoken eloquently about the need for democratization, Egypt's elections are anything but democratic. Why does nothing change?
I spent virtually my entire childhood in the Middle East, and though it is not my home, I worry about it as if it were my home. I mourn for it, I fear for it -- and I also greatly fear it. Modernity, if not ever completely defeated, seems to have been put on hold throughout much of the Arab world. A worn-out, 82-year-old pharaoh still reigns in Egypt. Royalty still rules in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Islamists still seem to be winning hearts and minds in a political vacuum.
The fact is that the Egypt of my adolescence in the 1960s was a more democratic and secular society than today. My father was an American Foreign Service officer stationed in Cairo from 1965-67. An army colonel, Gamal Abdel Nasser, was Egypt's virtual dictator. But Nasser had at least been elected president in 1956. He was a wildly popular and populist politician throughout Egypt.
Sadat was never as popular as Nasser. He had catered to the Islamists in the aftermath of Nasser's death, thinking they were not dangerous, and ending up being killed by them. Neither he nor Mubarak could have survived a truly democratic election.
Nasser became an autocrat, but at least he offered the Arabs a secular vision. Even today, Nasser remains emblematic of a lost era when hope still existed among Arabs of all classes and tribes for a modern, secular and progressive Arab nation.
Suave and articulate, Nasser exuded a quiet intelligence. His colleagues knew him to be incorruptible. He had no personal peccadilloes, aside from smoking three packs of cigarettes a day. He loved American films. His good friend the newspaper editor Mohammed Heikel claimed that Nasser loved watching Frank Capra's syrupy Christmas tale, "It's a Wonderful Life." His favorite American writer was Mark Twain. He spent an hour or two each evening reading American, French and Arabic magazines.
His closest political enemies at home were the Muslim Brotherhood, political theocrats who then attracted an insignificant following. Today, the Muslim Brotherhood would undoubtedly win any democratic election in Egypt.
But back in the 1960s, most young Arab men aspired to a secular modernity. They wanted to be engineers or doctors or lawyers -- and they admired, like Nasser did, American culture.
I lived in Cairo's upscale suburban community of Maadi, about eight miles south of the city on the eastern bank of the Nile River. I am startled to realize now that another resident of Maadi was the young Ayman al-Zawahiri.
In 1965, the future doctor and No. 2 leader of al Qaeda was attending Maadi's state-run secondary school. He was exactly my age. And like me, al-Zawahiri used to watch Hollywood films on an outdoor screen at the Maadi Sports Club.
Al-Zawahiri once aspired to a career in public health. His ambitions were the same as most young Arab men in the Nasser era. Even then he was a practicing Muslim. And his religious sensibilities did not become politically radicalized until after Nasser ordered the execution of the Muslim Brotherhood's leader, Sayyid Qutb, in 1966. But I would argue that al-Zawahiri and other young men would never have taken the road to jihadist terror had it not been for the June 1967 war.
Sadik al-Azm, the Yale-educated, Syrian philosopher, described Nasser's defeat in the June war as a "lightning bolt" and a "shock" to the Arab ethos. Nasser's humiliation spelled the defeat of the idea of a secular path to Arab modernity. Nasser's once powerful notion that the Arabic-speaking peoples of the Middle East could unite under the banner of a progressive Arab nationalist movement was now discredited.
Over time, political Islam moved into this political vacuum. Al-Zawahiri himself wrote in his 2001 memoir that the "Naksa" -- the June 1967 defeat -- "influenced the awakening of the jihadist movement."
Al-Zawahiri today is hiding in a cave in Afghanistan, or dodging drone missile attacks in Pakistan. Someday he will be a dead man, along with his pitiful co-conspirator Osama bin Laden. The jihadists don't have any thing real to offer the Arabs of the 21st century. They can't put bread on the table in this era of globalization.
Al-Azm believes the jihadists have already lost: "There may be intermittent battles in the decades to come, with many innocent victims. But the number of supporters of armed Islamism is unlikely to grow, its support throughout the Arab Muslim world will likely decline. September 11 signaled the last gasp of Islamism rather than the beginnings of its global challenge."
I hope so.
But if Al-Azm is right, the new generation of young Arab men and women must find hope for their lives elsewhere. And so long as tired old kings and pharaohs smother their rights to democratic elections and free speech, the jihadists will still offer a desperate alternative.
What Mr. Bird writes makes a great amount of sense. Islam, to me, is a primitive, totalitarian cult which disrespects all females and anyone else who doesn't agree with what is purported to be the 'word of Mohammed'.
Islam cavalierly disregards truth in favor of lies to further its cause--the domination of the world through jihad.
A most sickening thought, especially for anyone even remotely connected to the great tragedy of Septrmber 11, 2001.
In fact, chutzpah doesn’t even begin to describe the hypocrisy encapsulated in this little tidbit.
President Obama is planning on attending the graduating ceremony of Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan, next month. He intends to shake the hand of every graduating senior. No big deal; politicians love this sort of “mingling with the commoner” PR moment.
But there’s a catch for those seniors who want the honor of pressing flesh with The One:
Seniors are being asked to provide their birthdates, Social Security numbers and citizen status to the Secret Service so background checks could be performed.
I really love this shot of 'Cloud Gate', otherwise known as "The Bean", done here in Chicago. Many have photographed it, many have shot their own reflections. I did not.
I changed the header because, as an artist, I like change every now and then. And I, myself, have 'changed' many times in my life. I am changed now, and I may change tomorrow. After all, I change clothes a lot!
But I never change the basics. Ever. Nor should you.
If you love America, don't 'change' that love for something like, say, OBAMA. He is not America. Understand that, and let me repeat it: HE IS NOT AMERICA. HE IS NOT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I don't even think he is OF the United States of America!
He is merely a man who you elected, under duress I might add, who has been, tonight, eating $100/pound Wagyu beef while trying to impress the president of Mexico.
I believe that is where the term 'nit-pick' came from.
And just what did the First Spouse do tonight before the photo-op?
"Here, Barry, let me pick that eye-junk off your lashes. You should'a seen that, for all the time you've been spendin' lookin' in the mirror! And don't bother me again for the next couple of days! Dayum, I'm a busy woman!"
She 'groomed' her husband (IN PUBLIC!)--who many of you thought was PERFECT in every way!
Obviously, though, SHE is not. Just look how the stays of the dress cut into her underarm flab. She'll have bruises tomorrow!
And what's with the phony wig? And the phony personality?
Obama will pick Elena Kagan for high court: source
Kagan, 50, may be considered one of the safest bets for Obama because she has not worked as a judge and so has not authored any controversial opinions--NICE. So, she has not, like him, had any proper EXPERIENCE?
Is it because she is a reputed lesbian and what is known as a 'fag-hag'? Or simply because, as we well know, he has no taste in choosing women?
Should a lesbian be a member of the Supreme Court? Isn't there some kind of 'partisanship' if Elena Kagan is appointed to the Supreme Court?
Is Barry Soetoro OUT OF HIS MIND? Yes, I think the man has gone BONKERS, BIG TIME!
It seems Bill Morton 'DUMPED' the place in favor of Charmers, which is closer to his home base of 1205 W. Sherwin Avenue.
I know him to be quite LAZY. I co-founded Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce, with my monies, which I am hoping will be paid back.
And I still hope the PERSONAL LOANS that I made to him will be paid back.
Why, if he would pay me back the $1,425 he owes me for saving his ass vis a vis rent at 1205 W. Sherwin Avenue, here in Rogers Park, I could purchase a 'real' bed (as I have been sleeping on an air mattress) in order for my disabled back to be more comfortable.
BUT NO--Bill Morton pays no one back!
He seems to think he is 'entitled'. Hey, Bill, this is a REPUBLIC, remember that!
Bill Morton has a problem...it is psychological...with his MOTHER.
On Mother's Day, he did not post a thing about mothers, because he HATES his own mother. He will not speak about her.
This is the 33 year old man, who has told you he will bring about 'CHANGE' in Rogers Park.
And where have you seen 'change' because of Bill Morton's work in Rogers Park in the past six months?
Poor Barry Soetoro. He thought he had it made. But, quite frankly, he cannot make the (pay) grade)! Obama bemoans 'diversions' of IPod, Xbox era
(Because HE might not understand them??? But he gave an iPOD to the QUEEN?)
I will add my own comments of color, the color RED, the color of Marxism, which is exactly what this man is all about.. Is that OK with you? I really don't care!
HAMPTON, Virginia — US President Barack Obama lamented Sunday that in the iPad and Xbox era, information had become a diversion that was imposing new strains on democracy, in his latest critique of modern media.
Obama, who often chides journalists and cable news outlets for obsessing with political horse race coverage rather than serious issues, told a class of graduating university students that education was the key to progress.
"You're coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don't always rank all that high on the truth meter," Obama said at Hampton University, Virginia.
What he is saying to you, the 2010 graduates, is that he does not want you, even though you're trying to find a job, to get in the way of his 'job numbers'.
DON'T use your brain to become successful. Just listen to him (and Michelle) and everything will be OK, right?
"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations, -- none of which I know how to work
(You mean, all the time you spend with your daughters, and they haven't taught you a THING)
-- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," Obama said.
(But, didn't he gift the Queen of England with an iPod? Chew on that for a bit!)
He bemoaned the fact that "some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction," in the clamor of certain blogs and talk radio outlets."All of this is not only putting new pressures on you, it is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy."
Obama, who uses the handful of Commencement addresses that he delivers each year to meditate on societal developments broader than the minutiae of everyday politics, warned the world was at a moment of "breathtaking change."
(So he is planning on becoming the first MARXIST DICTATOR of the United States?).
"We can't stop these changes... but we can adapt to them," Obama said, adding that US workers were in a battle with well-educated foreign workers.
NO, WE CANNOT, AND WILL NOT, AND SHALL NOT!
"Education... can fortify you, as it did earlier generations, to meet the tests of your own time," he said.
Hampton University is a (n--grammar!) historically black college, and Obama noted the huge disparity in educational achievement between African Americans and other racial groups in the United States and the world.
(And Obama is NOT historically BLACK, but is what is known as 'MULATTO', the combination of black and white--as an artist, I would call that GRAY!).
But he urged the graduates to take inspiration from the example of Dorothy Height, a civil and women's rights icon who died, aged 98, last month, who fought racial prejudice to secure a college education.
"A black woman, in 1929, refusing to be denied her dream of a college education," Obama said, reprising Height's life story."Refusing to be denied her rights, refusing to be denied her dignity, refusing to be denied... her piece of America's promise."
(Has he given a rat's bum about Dorothy Height, ever, since he gained the White House? And what the hell does he really KNOW and UNDERSTAND about America, PERIOD?).
Obama argued that from the days of the pioneer politicians who founded the United States, until the modern day, education and knowledge had been the key to progress and US democracy.
He drew a line between Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and today's challenges.
"What Jefferson recognized... that in the long run, their improbable experiment -- called America -- wouldn't work if its citizens were uninformed, if its citizens were apathetic, if its citizens checked out, and left democracy to those who didn't have the best interests of all the people at heart.
(Well, Barry Soetoro, many of us ARE informed, and last time we 'checked it out', it was a REPUBLIC, A$$hat!)
"It could only work if each of us stayed informed and engaged, if we held our government accountable, if we fulfilled the obligations of citizenship."
(Nice LIE...I and others hold YOU accountable, and I and many others would really like to know if YOU have 'fulfilled the obligations of citizenship', Mister KENYAN!)
And...then there is this FASHION DEBACLE, courtey of the wifey. Have any of you ever shopped back rooms in dollar stores? This piece os shite is obviously where that came from...and the w____ has no frickin' idea?
What can we call this, but simply dragging out the remnants to cover the FFA--First Fat Ass? And, from Stage Right, ENTER THE WIFE
This is what is known as the 'First Lady of the United States of America'.
She walks like a cow, and wears very odd costumes. I would say she is more insane than Mary Todd Lincoln.
Why? Because Mary Todd Lincoln had a former slave as her tailor and dresser, and Mary Todd Lincoln had the aptitude to listen, UNLIKE Michelle (maybe, PREGGERS Michelle?).
Is this why Barry has been posing so much with babies lately? To show his 'fatherliness'?
Makes me want to run'n'puke, quite frankly!
Both of them seem to be QUITE HORRID HUMAN BEINGS, not quite the type of people I want around me!
In my last post, I told you about DEATH. Now, I'll give you a bit of information about CRIME in my area of Chicago, ROGERS PARK, which my debtee, Bill Morton, the President of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce, PREFERS, apparently, to 'gloss over'.
I may also say, the following list of crimes QUITE PROVES that the police (CPD) are working at their job, quite unlike the alderman of the 49th, Joe Moore, and, I might add, Bill Morton.
What really have Joe Moore or Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce done so far this year to make Rogers Park a better place for you to do business? Hmmm?
I really do expect an answer, but moreso, I expect some sort of repayment of the $1,425 I loaned Bill Morton last year...that he seems to conveniently have forgotten.
But, as long as I live, I will make his name known in Chicago as a 'grifter', a 'stiffer on loans'! And speaking of crimes...
...do they understand these fields of poppies, and what opium-use can do?
(For examples, you may want to look toward the White House.)
And that this is what it really is!
For instance, does Sergeant Henry truly understand where he is? (No offense, sir, simply trying to make the point that the war ON?WITH?AGAINST? Afghanistan hasn't done a damned thing to curtail opium-use in America, or in any of our allies' countries!
Afghanistan's WONDERFUL EXPORT--the opium from the opium poppy!
I am trying to allow comments, and Google has been working against me since 5 AM!
Will I EVER be able to allow you, the readers, to comment?
I simply don't know...There's been some hacking going on over the last six months, probably via 'Bill Morton' and his follower, the 'chess piece' (or the guy who really likes to wear 'costumes' all year 'round! You know the guy, don't you? Jimmy, Jimmy Wilkowski, from the South Side?).
He's the guy who told, apparently, Bill Morton that I should not receive a payback on a personal loan of $1.425. And Bill will follow Jimmy's "BISHOP" routine, because Bill Morton has followed everything this costume has suggested, since DAY ONE.
Why? Hmmm...I think 'neither of them are as they wish you perceive them to be'.
Perhaps these represent the political fervor amongst the voters of Rogers Park?
Oh...will you continue to vote for Ald. Joe Moore, who calls himself 'progressive', but as we here in the 49th Ward know and understand, he is soooo REgressive, and holds us all back from our POTENTIAL!?
A grim report circulating in the Kremlin today written by Russia’s Northern Fleet is reporting that the United States has ordered a complete media blackout over North Korea’s torpedoing of the giant Deepwater Horizon oil platform owned by the World’s largest offshore drilling contractor Transocean that was built and financed by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., that has caused great loss of life, untold billions in economic damage to the South Korean economy, and an environmental catastrophe to the United States.
Most important to understand about this latest attack by North Korea against its South Korean enemy is that under the existing “laws of war” it was a permissible action as they remain in a state of war against each other due to South Korea’s refusal to sign the 1953 Armistice ending the Korean War.
To the attack itself, these reports continue, the North Korean “cargo vessel” Dai Hong Dan believed to be staffed by 17th Sniper Corps “suicide” troops left Cuba’s Empresa Terminales Mambisas de La Habana (Port of Havana) on April 18th whereupon it “severely deviated” from its intended course for Venezuela’s Puerto Cabello bringing it to within 209 kilometers (130 miles) of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform which was located 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of the US State of Louisiana where it launched an SSC Sang-o Class Mini Submarine (Yugo class) estimated to have an operational range of 321 kilometers (200 miles). On the night of April 20th the North Korean Mini Submarine manned by these “suicidal” 17th Sniper Corps soldiers attacked the Deepwater Horizon with what are believed to be 2 incendiary torpedoes causing a massive explosion and resulting in 11 workers on this giant oil rig being killed outright. Barely 48 hours later, on April 22nd , this North Korean Mini Submarine committed its final atrocity by exploding itself directly beneath the Deepwater Horizon causing this $1 Billion oil rig to sink beneath the seas and marking 2010’s celebration of Earth Day with one of the largest environmental catastrophes our World has ever seen.
To the reason for North Korea attacking the Deepwater Horizon, these reports say, was to present US President Obama with an “impossible dilemma” prior to the opening of the United Nations Review Conference of the Parties to the Treat on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) set to begin May 3rd in New York.
This “impossible dilemma” facing Obama is indeed real as the decision he is faced with is either to allow the continuation of this massive oil leak catastrophe to continue for months, or immediately stop it by the only known and proven means possible, the detonation of a thermonuclear device.
Russian Navy atomic experts in these reports state that should Obama choose the “nuclear option” the most viable weapon at his disposal is the United States B83 (Mk-83) strategic thermonuclear bomb having a variable yield (Low Kiloton Range to 1,200 Kilotons) which with its 12 foot length and 18 inch diameter, and weighing just over 2,400 pounds, is readily able to be deployed and detonated by a remote controlled mini-sub.
Should Obama choose the “nuclear option” it appears that he would be supported by the International Court of Justice who on July 8, 1996 issued an advisory opinion on the use of nuclear weapons stating that they could not conclude definitively on these weapons use in “extreme circumstances” or “self defense”.
On the other hand, if Obama chooses the “nuclear option” it would leave the UN’s nuclear conference in shambles with every Nation in the World having oil rigs off their coasts demanding an equal right to atomic weapons to protect their environment from catastrophes too, including Iran.
To whatever decision Obama makes it remains a fact that with each passing hour this environmental catastrophe grows worse. And even though Obama has ordered military SWAT teams to protect other oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico from any further attack, and further ordered that all drilling in the Gulf of Mexico be immediately stopped, this massive oil spill has already reached the shores of America and with high waves and more bad weather forecast the likelihood of it being stopped from destroying thousands of miles of US coastland and wildlife appears unstoppable.
And not just to the environmental catastrophe that is unfolding the only devastation to be wrecked upon the United States and South Korea by this North Korean attack as the economic liabilities associated with this disaster are estimated by these Russian reports to be between $500 Billion to $1.5 Trillion, and which only a declaration of this disaster being an “act of war” would free some the World’s largest corporations from bankruptcy.
Important to note too in all of these events was that this was the second attack by North Korea on its South Korean enemy, and US ally, in a month as we had reported on in our March 28th report titled “Obama Orders ‘Immediate Stand-down’ After Deadly North Korean Attack” and which to date neither the Americans or South Korea have retaliated for and giving one senior North Korean party leader the courage to openly state that the North Korean military took “gratifying revenge” on South Korea.
And for those believing that things couldn’t get worse, they couldn’t be more mistaken as new reports coming from Japanese military sources are stating that North Korea is preparing for new launches of its 1,300 kilometer (807 miles) intermediate range ballistic “Rodong” missile which Russian Space Forces experts state is able to “deploy and detonate” an atomic electromagnetic pulse (EMP) device, and which if detonated high in the atmosphere could effectively destroy the American economy for years, if not decades, to come.
