I think that the crotchbomber incident was a turning point for Obama--he realized for the first time that bad things can happen that are out of his control.And that even though such things are out of his control, people will rightly and inevitably blame him for these bad things.
He had not considered this aspect of his job before and doesn't know how to deal with it.
