Daley’s plan has ’em drinking up along the lake
Even parks advocates not opposed to doubling licenses at venues along shore

Mayor Richard Daley wants people to drink more along the lakefront as a way to gin up money for the Chicago Park District and avoid raising taxes.

That relaxed, party-on vibe spread Wednesday from City Hall to lakefront aldermen and even parks advocacy groups who don't oppose Daley's plan to double the number of liquor licenses to 25 along Lake Michigan.

"It seems counterintuitive, I know, for a park organization to back this kind of a plan, but we feel it can really improve the experience for people in certain areas of the parks," said Bob O'Neill (scared jerk-off), president of the Grant Park Conservancy, who endorsed the liquor license expansion as a way to draw people to the lakefront.

A top ethics aide to Mayor Richard Daley has resigned in the face of allegations that he and his boss used poor judgment in the handling of a student intern's sexual harassment complaint.

Mark E. Meaney resigned his $146,940-a-year position as first deputy in the mayor's Office of Compliance. He had joined Anthony Boswell to run the compliance office in 2007, which Daley created to promote a culture of good conduct among city workers.

"It was a privilege to have been part of something that had never been tried before, corporate-style compliance in municipal government," Meaney wrote Tuesday in an email to the Tribune.
"Mayor Daley should be applauded in his efforts at true reform. Unfortunately, fear and blame seem to be winning over culture change."

Meaney's comments seemed to be aimed at the Inspector General's Office, which has been criticized in court filings for allegedly creating a "culture of fear" where workers are reluctant to report honest mistakes for fear they will be punished.

Meaney said he was returning to the private sector and had no regrets.

Ald. Carothers pleads guilty to corruption in deal with feds

Carothers' conviction brings to 28 the number of alderman found guilty of wrongdoing since 1972.

One of those was Carothers' father, William, who was accused of similar wrongdoing as his son.

The elder Carothers was sentenced to 3 years in federal prison in 1983 for extorting remodeling work for his ward office.
